Guest Speaker: "Immoral Philosophers: Keep or Cancel?"

Carlo DaVia (Fordham University)

Abstract:

Many famous philosophers have flawed moral records. Aristotle, for example, condoned slavery and argued that women had by nature diminished capacities for reasoning. What should we do about these problematic thinkers? Can we keep reading them, or do they deserve to be canceled? The aim of my presentation is to clarify some of the relevant ethical issues so that we all can make better decisions about who we study and why.
